Global technology service provider World Wide Technology (WWT) is getting two new buildings in the Metro East region.
The St. Louis, MO-based technology systems integrator is investing on a massive development project within the 2,300-acre Gateway Commerce Center in Edwardsville, IL.
TriStar Properties is spearheading the project, with Contegra Construction taking charge of building operations.
A milestone in St. Louis commercial real estate
Projected to cost more than $115 million, WWT’s investment in leasing 2 million square feet at the Gateway industrial park is one of the largest industrial property transactions in the St. Louis metropolitan area to date. WWT will lease the space for 10 years.
At Gateway, WWT joins other high-profile enterprises specializing in technology, logistics, supply chain solutions, health and wellness, skincare products, food and beverage, and consumer goods and retail.
Other notable companies with facilities at Gateway Commerce Center include Amazon, The Dial Corporation, The Hershey Company, Procter & Gamble, DB Schenker, Unilever, and Walgreens.
Founded in 1990, WWT provides information technology and supply chain solutions to global clients. According to Forbes, “the company’s supply chain solutions consist of a full range of procurement and logistics services, including product warehousing and distribution; equipment staging and configuration; and just-in-time shipping.”
WWT has an annual revenue of $10.4 billion and employs more than 4,600 people in 70 offices worldwide. Forbes ranks World Wide Technology as the 27th largest private company in the United States.
Bigger, state-of-the-art facilities
WWT’s Gateway campus is expected to boost the company’s production and distribution processes. The project is in line with the company’s recent move to its new Maryland Heights, MO headquarters in November 2017.
Started in mid-2018, the construction project will result in a 176-acre build-to-suit campus that features two buildings.
One building, designated as the Integration Technology Center, will be used for production and assembly. This is where WWT employees will design digital solutions and build applications for its global customers. The tech center is projected to be completed by April 2019.
The second building is intended to be the company’s primary storage and distribution hub in North America. This facility is due to open in August 2019.
Both buildings will have 36-foot clear height ceilings.The tech center will feature 30 dock doors, while the warehouse and distribution center will have 90 dock doors with cross-docking capabilities.
Keeping pace with tremendous growth
Approximately 1,500 employees will move to the new Gateway facilities from their current work stations at Lakeview Commerce Center, also located in Edwardsville. The new buildings will also accommodate an additional 500 new jobs over the next few years.
“We originally thought we’d have enough capacity when we built out our existing facilities,” said WWT CEO Jim Kavanaugh. “But we’ve just grown out of that capacity and actually have had to start using other facilities on a temporary basis. We’re also looking at this as an opportunity to add additional capabilities that we just can’t do in our current buildings.”
